Updated October 2026.
This Christmas version of the Woolworths mud cake hack turns two store-bought chocolate mud cakes into a festive centrepiece. You stack them, cover them in vanilla frosting, pour over a dark chocolate ganache and decorate with Christmas chocolates and candy canes. There's no baking, it serves 8, and it takes about 45 minutes, including 10 minutes in the fridge.

What is the Woolworths mud cake hack?
The hack took Australia by storm: buy a ready-made chocolate mud cake from the supermarket, scrape off the icing, and decorate it so it looks like it came from a cake shop. It's a favourite with busy parents and anyone who wants a show-stopping cake without baking. We first saw a beautiful version from OhSoBusyMum, and it was even featured on the news.
At Christmas, an everyday mud cake doesn't quite cut it. So we teamed up with @wearethegilmores, who created this recipe and took the photos, to give the hack a festive makeover with Chocilo chocolates.

What decorations do you need?
Everything on top of our cake is from Chocilo, plus a few candy canes:
- Chocolate Christmas stars: our Christmas Star in Milk Chocolate with Speckles ($4.50 each, 20g) is a similar size to the chocolate trees in our photos. Our photos show Christmas Tree Trimmers, which we no longer stock, and these stars are the closest match.
- Foiled chocolate baubles: unwrap a few from a bag of Assorted Foiled Baubles in Milk Chocolate ($15.95).
- A chocolate star: unwrap one from a bag of Assorted Foiled Stars in Milk Chocolate ($15.95).
- Ganache: 125g of Couverture Dark Chocolate Buttons ($16.95 for 250g), melted with 125g of thickened cream.
- Candy canes: four, whole or crushed and sprinkled over the top.
Want to swap things around? Our Christmas range has plenty more chocolates that work on a cake. The Gingerbread Man Lollipop ($5.95) can be pushed straight into the top.
Can I use a Coles mud cake instead?
Yes. The hack works with any ready-made chocolate mud cake. You'll need two, so the cake has two layers.
How far ahead can I make it?
Keep the finished cake covered in the fridge. The ganache and frosting contain cream and butter, so it shouldn't sit out on the bench, especially on a hot Christmas Day. Food safety authorities advise keeping your fridge at or below 5°C, because bacteria grow quickly between 5°C and 60°C (NSW Food Authority). The cake will keep for a few days in the fridge.
